The Michigan Renewable Fuels Commission (RFC) has legislative authority to continue operating until January 1, 2010. Back in June 2007, they issued their Initial Report to both the Governor and State Legislature. It is available on both RFC and MDA Websites. The RFC web site, www.renewablefuelscommission.org , was originally designed by Public Sector Consultants of Lansing, MI. It is being maintained by the Michigan Department of Agriculture in order to continue to make available to the citizens of Michigan and others the resources and valuable research documents obtained by members and staff of the Michigan Renewable Fuels Commission.

No future meetings of the RFC have been scheduled. When future meetings and other events with the Michigan Renewable Fuels Commission are planned, proper public notice will appear on both the RFC and MDA websites. Thank You.

In an effort to encourage the production and use of biodiesel and ethanol products in Michigan, increase the viability of Michigan’s agriculture industry, and reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign oil, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm approved on July 7, 2006, a bipartisan package of bills to encourage the use of renewable fuels within the state.

The legislation in the seven-bill package included a law establishing a renewable fuels commission within the state’s Department of Agriculture (MDA). The newly formed bipartisan commission is charged with the following tasks:

  • Investigating and recommending strategies that the governor and the legislature may implement to promote the use of alternative fuels and encourage the use of vehicles that utilize alternative fuels
  • Identifying mechanisms that promote research into alternative fuels
  • Identifying mechanisms that promote effective communication and coordination of efforts between the state and local governments, private industry, and institutions of higher education concerning the investigation, research into, and promotion of alternative fuels
  • Identifying and reviewing state regulation that may hinder the use, research, and development of alternative fuels and vehicles that are able to utilize them and recommending changes to the governor
  • Issuing a written report, including information gathered and recommendations, to the governor and the legislature by July 7, 2007, and annual (or more frequent if the commission deems advisable) follow-up reports thereafter
